wpd, Vattenfall and BlueFloat Energy consortium are delighted to be prequalified for the 5th offshore wind tender off the coast of southern Brittany. The project with a targeted installed capacity of 250 MW should be awarded in 2022 for commissioning by 2029. This wind farm will represent a major step in the development of offshore wind power at the French and international level since it will be one of the first commercial-scale floating windfarms in the world.
For this call for tenders, wpd, Vattenfall and BlueFloat Energy have come together as a consortium in order to:
• Combine their experience as major players in offshore wind power, in France and internationally, with 16 wind farms in operation, 5 wind farms under construction (including 2 in France) and more than 10 GW in development (including 1 GW in France) ;
• Provide a unique expertise in delivering floating offshore wind projects;
• Build on their territorial proximity and consultation expertise with local stakeholders;
• Deploy their know-how in industrial and technological innovation as well as their track-record in environmental excellence.
This call for tenders is launched in the framework of the multiannual energy plan and follows a local public debate organized between July and December 2020 which enabled the State to identify an area with a surface of 130km2 where the windfarm could be developed. The announcement of the prequalification launches the start of the next phase, so-called competitive dialogue, which will allow the prequalified players and the State to define more precisely the wind farm location and the criteria of the tender rules.
With a 100% renewable energy installed base, wpd develops, finances, builds and operates wind farms (onshore and offshore) and solar photovoltaic projects. Founded in 1996 in Germany, wpd is present in 28 countries and has installed more than 5.15 GW of renewable energy, split between onshore wind, offshore wind and solar photovoltaic.
A pioneer in offshore wind power, wpd offshore benefits from a unique execution experience with 18 projects (14,250 MW), including 3 wind farms in operation (447 MW), 3 projects under construction (1,588 GW) and 12 wind farms under development (12.2 GW) in 7 countries.
Established in 2007, the French subsidiary, wpd offshore France, was named co-winner of the first French call for tenders for the development, construction and operation of the future Calvados and Fécamp wind farms. Once commissioned, the two wind farms will have a total capacity of 948 MW and will supply 1.47 million homes with electricity.

Vattenfall, established in 1909 and 100% owned by the Swedish state, is one of the largest producers and suppliers of electricity, gas and heat in Europe. Present in 7 European countries (Germany, Denmark, Finland, France, Netherlands, United Kingdom and Sweden), Vattenfall has around 14 million customers and nearly 20,000 employees.
Vattenfall is on a mission to enable fossil free living within one generation. To achieve this, the group is concentrating all of its new investments in renewable energies, ie more than € 1 billion per year. Today, Vattenfall is notably one of the world leaders in offshore wind power, with 13 wind farms in operation in 5 countries in Europe and more than 5 GW in development.
Beyond energy generation, the group is also committed to the decarbonisation of transport and industry: Vattenfall operates a network of more than 23,000 charging stations for electric vehicles in Europe and is involved in innovative partnerships for the electrification of industry, such as fossil-free steel production using hydrogen produced by electrolysis (“Hybrit” project).
Present in France for 20 years in the supply of energy to professional and to residential customers since 2018, Vattenfall continues its trajectory towards ranking among the top 5 energy suppliers by 2023 and also aims to develop its own production capacity from renewable energies in France by 2030, particularly in offshore wind power.
