Triskéol: the consortium wpd, Vattenfall and BlueFloat Energy reveals the name of their project for the floating offshore wind tender off the coast of Southern Brittany in France

Paris, 27 October 2021 – The consortium formed by wpd, Vattenfall and BlueFloat Energy reveals the name of their project for the fifth offshore wind tender off the coast of Southern Brittany, for which it is prequalified since the 15th of September 2021.

The choice of the name Triskéol fully reflects the identity of the consortium: the combination of three major players in offshore wind with unique expertise who embrace a consultative approach, anchored in the territory close to local stakeholders.

Triskéol is the association of the Triskel, a characteristic symbol of Celtic art, and of Aeolus, the keeper of the winds. In addition to a strong link with the Breton culture, the name refers to the wind, a natural source of energy, and the wind turbine, which transforms the wind into renewable electricity.

The colors of the logo also reflect the local footprint and the strong identity of Brittany with the choice of black and variations of blue. We find in fact the black of the traditional Breton flag (Gwenn ha du), and the blue-green (Glaz) typical of the Breton seas where the floating wind farm will be located. The symbol perched over the name of the project evokes, of course, a wind turbine in motion, which turns towards the future.

With the name Triskéol, the consortium of wpd, Vattenfall and BlueFloat Energy blends into the culture of the Brittany region and demonstrates its desire to anchor itself in the territory.

About wpd:

With a 100% renewable energy installed base, wpd develops, finances, builds and operates wind farms (onshore and offshore) and solar photovoltaic projects. Founded in 1996 in Germany, wpd is present in 28 countries and has installed more than 5.15 GW of renewable energy, split between onshore wind, offshore wind and solar photovoltaic.

A pioneer in offshore wind power, wpd offshore benefits from a unique execution experience with 18 projects (14,250 MW), including 3 wind farms in operation (447 MW), 3 projects under construction (1,588 GW) and 12 wind farms under development (12.2 GW) in 7 countries.

Established in 2007, the French subsidiary, wpd offshore France, was named co-winner of the first French call for tenders for the development, construction and operation of the future Calvados and Fécamp wind farms. Once commissioned, the two wind farms will have a total capacity of 948 MW and will supply 1.47 million homes with electricity.

About Vattenfall:

Vattenfall, established in 1909 and 100% owned by the Swedish state, is one of the largest producers and suppliers of electricity, gas and heat in Europe. Present in 7 European countries (Germany, Denmark, Finland, France, Netherlands, United Kingdom and Sweden), Vattenfall has around 14 million customers and nearly 20,000 employees.

Vattenfall is on a mission to enable fossil free living within one generation. To achieve this, the group is concentrating all of its new investments in renewable energies, ie more than € 1 billion per year. Today, Vattenfall is notably one of the world leaders in offshore wind power, with 13 wind farms in operation in 5 countries in Europe and more than 5 GW in development.

Beyond energy generation, the group is also committed to the decarbonisation of transport and industry: Vattenfall operates a network of more than 23,000 charging stations for electric vehicles in Europe and is involved in innovative partnerships for the electrification of industry, such as fossil-free steel production using hydrogen produced by electrolysis (“Hybrit” project).

Present in France for 20 years in the supply of energy to professional and to residential customers since 2018, Vattenfall continues its trajectory towards ranking among the top 5 energy suppliers by 2023 and also aims to develop its own production capacity from renewable energies in France by 2030, particularly in offshore wind power.
